  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Promising start, but then wanders down the garden path (and into a wild goose chase) . : The book promised a lot, and started so well, but by about halfway through it had wandered off down the garden path and became a wild goose chase that led the reader directly to a swamp of wild speculation, logical fallacy, and jumping to (erroneous) conclusions. This is a pity as it started so well. Had it stuck to the theme of the early part - a quirky aristocratic family's involvement in the resistance, their experience, bravery, and betrayal - it would have been an excellent book. Unfortunately the author tries to blend this highly interesting and very personal narrative into a much broader and deeper story linking the penetration and destruction of SOE's PROSPER network with the betrayal, arrest and murder of the resistance leader Jean Moulin. This was, we are told, part of a fiendishly clever plot by SIS (Mi6) to simultaneously weaken Charles de Gaulle, destroy the reputation of SOE, and fool the Germans into believing that the allied invasion of Europe would take place as early as 1943. Stupidity, incompetence and outright bungling by SOE in the field and at London HQ is presented as proof of the SIS plot. Blatant treason by Henri Dericourt is somehow more proof of the plot, and likely treason in London (Nicolas Boddington, the number 3 in SOE's French section, has a well earned cloud marked "traitor" hovering over him) is again presented not as treason but as evidence of the plot. Lost or redacted records are further proof of the plot (rather than fairly successful attempts by the incompetent and criminal to take advantage of their position at war's end to destroy or alter records to protect their reputations and hide their failings). Despite promises absolutely no link whatsoever between the destruction of PROSPER and the betrayal of Jean Moulin is given (for there is none) and the book really does lose it's way in the second half. A pity. Early on the author states that he received a mysterious and cryptic anonymous letter hinting at the plot and linking PROSPER and Jean Moulin. He says his first instinct was to destroy the letter but instead he used it to guide his research and point the way to his objective. It is a pity he didn't listen to his instincts. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from monica kaufman -- there's always more to the story : Read it to understand more about life with SOE. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from George D. Kenney -- No mention of Virginia Hall? : For what it is, not bad. Entertaining anecdotes and grab bag of unusual/telling facts. What it’s not, a history of WWII resistance in France, in context of the world of intelligence. An easy (but misleading) read. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from GED -- A marvelous, beautifully written, moving work! : This book is a fitting tribute to the courageous men and women of the Resistance and SOE who were betrayed-some by an intelligence service of their own country-and suffered torture, ignominious death or captivity in Nazi concentration camps. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from wrinkled weasel -- A Labyrinth : This book tries to be part biography, part mystery story and the rest ..history. The mass of information, which is presumably researched with care (though I have no way of knowing) ends up being less than the sum of its desultory parts. The warning signs are the copious notes, glossaries and lists at the front of the book. Everybody who was in the war gets a mention. Well, almost, but they pop up here and there and it is difficult to follow the reasoning. I could not follow the timelines because the author jumps from one proposition to another, back and forth, so that any attempt by me to construct a chronological sequence failed. A timeline of events is given as an appendix, as is a list of 'principal characters' and it is perhaps an indication of how confusing it all is that the author felt it necessary to include them. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Macolla -- Fascinating but flawed : This is a fascinating book, well worth reading. I intend to read it again and highly recommend it.. However the author's attempt to link the betrayal of Jean Moulin and other resisters at Caluire on Sunday 21st June 1943 and the betrayal and breakup of the SOE network PROSPER is unconvincing to me. As unconvincing as his earlier account in his biography of Jean Moulin " The Death of Jean Moulin : Biography of a Ghost " of what happened there. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Felixsmum -- Disappointing. : The blurb promised a lot but the book failed to deliver. I could have done without the long section at the start detailing the author's young days among people called Bunty and Biff at a French chateau, all on their way up to Oxford or down from Cambridge or about to join the Guards and driving terribly amusing sports cars. We are led to believe the author has been given, by an anonymous correspondent, a key to the central mystery of the French Resistance - who betrayed Jean Moulin in 1943 - but then we have to track through a morass of unnecessary detail (not even walk-on characters come without a mini-biography to slow the narrative) and his conclusion, when we finally get there, did not convince me. The author wrote a would-be iconoclastic biography of Moulin some years ago and does not seem able to shake off a distaste for Communism which colours all his attitudes and conclusions: a determination to see reds under beds isn't the best route to the truth. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Stephen Dorril -- A GOOD READ : Some of the criticisms of the book made in other reviews are valid and for a reader new to the subject this will be a dense and complicated affair. However, I enjoyed it. It is very well written and if it is a meander down many different lanes, it has enough intrigue, speculation and a real sense of history to warrant a close read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from hiker -- Very good account of Resistance rings in occupied France : Political intrigue, internecine rivalry between intelligence departments and political leaders with more pride than common sense it. An in depth and detailed account of how one resistance ring in France foundered and the players involved. The sheer number of players sometimes make the story difficult to follow but well worth preserving. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2020 )
